Overview
This major peer-reviewed study examines the full body of scientific evidence on loss of consciousness in cattle following non-stun slaughter, including Shechita. It finds that when Shechita is performed correctly, under low-stress conditions and in accordance with religious requirements, loss of consciousness occurs rapidly, typically within around ten seconds. This conclusion is based on the highest-quality studies using direct measurements of brain activity, rather than behavioural signs or reflexes.
This paper directly addresses long-standing claims that non-mechanically stun religious slaughter causes prolonged suffering. By separating reliable neurological evidence from misleading indicators, the study provides strong scientific reassurance that Shechita meets the ethical requirement to minimise animal suffering while fully complying with Jewish law.
